WCW NITRO EDITING GUIDE

1. HOW DO I EDIT SKINS?
An awful broad question. You need 5 things: an art program that can edit .raw files (Paint Shop Pro works nicely), good pictures of wrestlers, a basic understanding of the editing principles outlined by Broken Halo's WCW Nitro Page , time, and patience. Honestly, Broken Halo's site is probably a better place to start than here. Very detailed and technical. A++

2. WHERE CAN I GET PAINT SHOP PRO?
You can buy Paint Shop Pro at any retail computer software store. I've seen it at Best Buy and CompUSA for around $50. You can also order it online or download a demo.

3. WHERE CAN I DOWNLOAD A CRACK FOR PAINT SHOP PRO?
Should you decide to crack the demo version of Paint Shop Pro, understand that it is considered software piracy and subject to all laws therein. Therefore I will not provide the crack on my site, nor will I provide a link to it. I will however say that it's easier to find than you might think if you start lurking around warez sites.

4. WHAT FILES DO I NEED TO KNOW?
There are basically three files you need to find in order to start editing: the .raw file, the .hry file, and the .pcw file. The .hry and .pcw files control the shape of the wrestler and how the .raw file fits on the body. The .raw file holds the graphics that you see in the game. This is the file you will draw, write, cut, copy, or paste onto. These files are found in you c:\...\WCW_Nitro\Wrestler\ folder and are marked n___.hry, n___.pcw, and n___0-3.raw

5. HOW DO I EDIT THE .HRY AND .PCW FILES?
At this time there is no known way to change these files. If someone knows a way, they surely haven't shown me.

6. WHAT DO THE .BMP FILES IN THE WRESTLERS FOLDER DO?
Basically these are the same as .raw files. If a computer does not have accelerated graphics, the game will use .bmp files instead of .raw files. In shorter terms, they are the graphic files read when you are not in 3-d mode.

7. I CAN'T OPEN THE .RAW FILE. WHAT'S WRONG?
A couple of things you need to know when opening .raw files. First off, when Paint Shop Pro tries to open a .raw file when the preview box is checked, it will freeze up. So uncheck the box and open the .raw file. When the "Raw Options" box appears, there are three sections to worry about. The first section is image size. Set this to Width: 256 x Height:512. For rings, the settings are 256 x 1792. For color channels, mark the box: Three channel (RGB). For file structure, mark the boxes: Interleaved (RGB, RGB..) and Order BGR. With these settings, you should be able to see the entire .raw file under the correct color conditions.

8. MY SKINS TURN OUT BLUE. WHAT GIVES?
Okay, when the game reads the skins, it reads them as RGB order. When it reads these files, they are tinted blue and the game converts them to normal hue. Thus when we edit, we have to open the .raw files as described in Question 7. The only thing is when you open a .raw file as BGR, you must use "save" instead of "save as". Using this and the procedure in question 7, this should solve a lot of problems.

9. I TRIED CHANGING THE POSITION OF WRESTLERS IN THE GAME. NOW THE SKINS ARE JUMBLED. HOW DO I FIX IT?
If you get a jumbled skin, it's likely the .raw file is not matched up with the correct .hry and .pcw files. To move a wrestler, you MUST rename the .raw files AND the .hry and the .pcw files or else you'll get a face on a chest, legs on the back of the head...

10. I CAN'T DRAW FACES WELL. CAN I USE REAL PICTURES INSTEAD?
Absolutely. In fact I encourage it. Keep in mind that if you use real pictures, you'll need to convert it to Nitro colors. It's easier than it sounds. First crop out the face you want to paste on. Make sure the facial features (eyes, nose, and mouth) match up on both faces. Then load this color palette onto the pic. You may have to tweak the brightness, color, and gamma correction a bit, but you'll have a nice face that matches the colors of the game.

11. HOW DO YOU CHANGE MOVES IN THE GAME?
As of this writing, there is no known way to change, rearrange, or edit moves.

12. CAN I CREATE SIX MAN TAGS, HARDCORE MATCHES, CASKET MATCHES, LADDER MATCHES, FALLS COUNT ANYWHERE MATCHES, FOREIGN OBJECTS, MANAGERS, OR FULL COMMENTARY?
Nope. Not now, not ever. The only things we're able to edit are wrestlers, rings, sounds, menuart, and (God willing) maybe moves someday.

13. HOW DO I CHANGE NAMES IN THE GAME?
Get yourself a hex editor, then read our Hex Editing Guide.
